John Walker MBE
Profile:
John in the Army for a year then moved on to work in the offshore survey industry & traveled all over the world. It was when I was at home on leave when I had a very bad RTA which left me with a partially paralysed right arm and badly damaged legs.
Watching the London 2012 Paralympics I saw an American archer called Matt Stutzman, I was amazed as he was born with no arms and he shot with his feet & I just thought to myself, I wonder if I could do it one handed.
I knew I was a good shot when I served in the Army, so decided to give archery a go.
I went on from there wining World Championships and European Championships to winning 2 Gold W1 Medals in the Paralympics in Rio 2016 and afterwards was awarded a MBE for services to Archery
In 2017 I was reclassified to standing W2 in archery, so after a short struggle I decided to try shooting a rifle which was my first real passion from my army days. I managed to get onto the British Shooting talent team. But unfortunately I got an injury to my right shoulder & I made the hardest decision to retire from both Archery & Rifle shooting.
But, I am not one to give up, as I am not done yet with winning Paralympic medals for my country.
So I have returned back to archery & I can’t believe how much I have missed shooting a bow & my archery family.. My goal is to get to Paris Paralympics & to get to Worlds Number 1 in W2 as I have already done that as a W1 archer!
